Every now and then someone says or writes something that reaches you. Such is the case here. For those of you that have Adelante on your list, in your store or are considering it, please take the time to look over what Jon Rimmerman of Garagiste Wine wrote.
Many of you have asked for high worth/value examples of Malbec from Argentina – Malbec. Today's bottle represents that sweet spot - it's a wine that is nearly unknown to US palates or to the big import houses but it was crafted hand in hand with a somewhat reclusive US veteran of Sonoma Mountain (Ray K and his Laurel Glen heritage). This is Ray's "I'm tired of the rat race - I'm tired of high real estate and grape prices in Napa/Sonoma and I want to make real, honest, sensible wine without any pressure from above" bottle of 100% authenticity!
This is Adelante - a high reaching bottle of deeply pitched (but completely level-headed) wine from La Consulta - the golden zone of Malbec. There is no plan to create a marketing concept around Adelante. It's a wine that's "all about that base" - the raw materials are exceptional and that’s all the marketing they require.
The wine is a single vineyard gem on original rootstock (65-70 year old vines) that gives very flavorful and rich results without being heavy or overtly in your face. This wine dictates a new consciousness of Argentinean Malbec for US consumers - one that is outstanding at the table or with friends alone as an accompaniment to conversation. It is not a gargantuan creature of 15.0+% alcohol but a refined bottle that still has a large palate presence and no problem devouring a charcoal grilled steak (in a genteel way, of course). In other words, your mouth will still be purple-stained but it is from natural extractive not a formulaic experiment.
I rarely believe an entire case purchase is warranted with wine but this is a case (sorry, another pun) where a case may be too little - the wine is that enjoyable and it will be slurped by experienced oenophiles …. Due to exemplary value and reach far above its $, It wouldn't surprise me if this is our #1 most popular wine of 2015. You won't be surprised either (once you taste it).
Sometimes, the plain and simple truth is all you need in a bottle of wine and Ray and his passion have brought the best of Argentina to our table at a tariff that is easy to enjoy.
